ART: “Water of the World”

Elaine Stewart, Artist

Toronto, ON

This piece is designed to be optimally seen from a wheelchair height. This will not interrupt other viewers' experience of the piece. The base of this piece is a decorative bathroom object, shaped like a tall, narrow, graceful swan (24"). This swan is anointed with dirt and earth. On this swan shaped base, apparently growing up out of the head of the swan, sits a perfectly square glass walled display case (13" X 13" X 13"), Within the box, unseen by any observer, sits a tangled ball of green plastic garden ties, surrounding that ball are strips of fabric that reflect some of the many shades of blue present in water. The water, living and uncontained, bursts out of the box at the base and strips of fabric, held together by clothespins, spill out onto the floor. Sitting on top of the box is a sign. A dollar store product is suspended on an ikea decoration hanger that resembles a squat cross. It resembles a roadside advertisement billboard, that names this construction HOME.
