Résumé

Le musicien, compositeur et producteur de musique montréalais Paul Tshuma parle de sa carrière et de son processus musical avec le rédacteur et la rédactrice en chef de ce numéro spécial, Ash McAskill et Samuel Thulin. Paul Tshuma était l’un des deux conférencier·es invité·e du symposium VIBE. Il a édité l’entrevue audio/balado incluse dans ce numéro de la revue. La transcription de l’entrevue, réalisée le 8 avril 2019, est présentée ici.

Paul Tshuma

Bhekimpilo ‘Paul’ Tshuma is a Zimbabwean born musician and published poet, currently residing in Canada.   

He is a McGill and Concordia University Alumni, studying Computer Software Design at McGill and Music at Concordia. These achievements have provided Paul with many opportunities to give workshops on disability challenges at both McGill and Concordia, while also facilitating workshops for a not-for-profit organisation (COCO).

Paul’s desire to become a disability activist stemmed from inaccessible lived experiences at University, where the lack of accessibility in certain University buildings resulted in arriving at lectures late or having to leave lectures early in order to be in time for the next lecture or transport. This lack of accessibility resulted in him being given the opportunity to audit the adaptation of accessibility in University buildings.

Paul is also an accessibility consultant at Pluri, an organization geared towards social justice. Paul’s role at Pluri was to create a list and map accessible nightlife spaces in Montreal.

Alongside his brother, he started United Tribulation Choir, a gospel choir focussed on sharing their faith and telling their life story. The availability of technology has allowed him to compose, arrange, record and teach singing.

Ash McAskill, University of Guelph at ReVision: Centre for Arts and Social Justice

Ash McAskill is an ally and academic in the disability arts and theatre community, and a slow theatre practitioner. Ash has worked with disabled artists across Canada to mobilize against the current ableism that exists in the performing arts. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Guelph at ReVision: Centre for Arts and Social Justice. She is a trained Relaxed Performance facilitator, and an accessibility consultant based in Montréal, Québec. She has led slow theatre workshops in Vancouver, Guelph. Toronto, Montreal, and Mexico City, and has co-convened working groups on disability and performance.

Samuel Thulin, Independent Artist and Researcher

Samuel Thulin is an artist, researcher, and educator interested in the specificities of spaces and places, and in the movements and resonances of bodies, data, and sounds. Through his artworks and publications he has explored: locative media and contested senses of place; confluences of cartography and auditory culture; self-tracking, chronic illness, and datafication; and creative and emergent research methodologies. He has exhibited his work, given workshops, and presented research at venues in Canada, the US, Mexico, Argentina, the UK, Sweden, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Spain, and Greece. Originally from Nortondale, New Brunswick and currently based in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal, he holds a PhD in Communication Studies from Concordia University.  Visit his website at: https://samuelthulin.com/
